Donald Trump Says Three Major News Outlets Will Be Banned From White House

Date:

President Donald Trump said Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are being banned from the White House, announcing that the move would take effect “effective immediately.” The announcement marks another escalation in the Trump administration’s increasingly contentious relationship with major news organizations.

Trump did not provide a specific rationale for banning the three outlets. Instead, he accused media organizations of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fiction and lies” when covering the president, his administration and the United States. He also warned that other media organizations could face similar restrictions.

The announcement comes as the White House has taken a more aggressive approach toward controlling press access during Trump’s second term. Earlier, the administration barred The Associated Press from the White House press pool and certain events after the news organization continued using the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America,” the name Trump has promoted.

The Pentagon has also significantly restricted access for many news organizations, further changing the traditional relationship between the federal government and the press. Against that backdrop, excluding major news outlets from the White House altogether would represent a significant additional restriction on journalists covering the administration.

Despite Trump’s announcement, reporters from the affected organizations are expected to continue covering the administration and reporting on its activities. Their journalists can continue following developments outside the White House and reporting information obtained through other sources, even if their access to the building or official events is restricted.

CNN’s chief White House correspondent is Kaitlan Collins, who also hosts a primetime program for the network. MS NOW’s White House coverage is led by Vaughn Hillyard. The White House Correspondents’ Association, which represents journalists covering the presidency, is led by Fox News correspondent Jacqui Heinrich and is expected to challenge the restrictions.

CNN quickly responded to Trump’s announcement, defending its White House reporting team and its journalistic record. A CNN spokesperson said the network stands fully behind its reporters and their “fair and accurate reporting.”

The network also argued that journalists have a constitutional right to report on the government without interference. CNN said that if the proposed ban is implemented, it would represent what the network described as an illegal assault on a fundamental right protected by the U.S. Constitution.

The dispute reflects a broader conflict between Trump and news organizations that has continued throughout his political career. Trump has frequently criticized major media outlets over their coverage of his administration, accusing them of unfair reporting and repeatedly using the term “fake news” when discussing organizations whose coverage he disagrees with.

The latest announcement raises questions about how the White House would enforce the restrictions and whether the affected organizations would be completely denied access to presidential events, briefings and other official activities. It also remains to be seen whether the administration will extend similar restrictions to additional news organizations.

For the press corps, the dispute could become another significant test of the relationship between presidential control over access to the White House and the constitutional protections afforded to journalists. While the administration can establish rules governing access to presidential events, excluding particular news organizations because of their reporting could lead to legal and institutional challenges.

The White House’s decision also comes at a time when press access has become an increasingly contentious issue across the federal government. Restrictions imposed on the Associated Press and changes to media access at the Pentagon have already generated disputes between the administration and news organizations.

With Trump now targeting CNN, MS NOW and Politico, the latest confrontation could further intensify the debate over press freedom, presidential authority and the role of journalists in covering the U.S. government. The next steps will depend on how the White House implements the announced restrictions and whether the affected organizations or press organizations pursue legal action.
