Two Strangers To Hit The Road On First National Tour In 2027

Date:

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) will end its Broadway run later this year, with the musical scheduled to play its final performance on Nov. 29 after roughly one year at the Longacre Theatre.

The two-person musical opened on Broadway on Nov. 20, 2025, following successful runs in Boston and London’s West End. Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts have led the production throughout its Broadway engagement, portraying two strangers from very different backgrounds who form an unexpected connection in New York City.

Written and composed by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) follows a young British man who arrives in New York with considerable excitement for his first visit to the city. His enthusiasm brings him into contact with a more cynical New Yorker, setting up a relationship that develops as the story unfolds.

The production was directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Tim Jackson. Despite receiving significant recognition during its Broadway run, the musical will close without extending its engagement beyond November.

The announcement comes amid declining attendance and box-office grosses for the production over recent months. The show has recently been playing to around 70 percent capacity, while weekly grosses have been around or below $500,000. Those figures have contributed to the decision to conclude the Broadway engagement after approximately one year.

The musical received eight Tony Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical. Tutty and Pitts were also recognized with acting nominations for their performances. However, the production ultimately did not win a Tony Award.

The Broadway production brought the musical to a wider American audience after its earlier engagements in Boston and London’s West End. Its transfer to Broadway marked a major step for the original musical, which centers its story on two characters and relies heavily on the chemistry between its two performers. The show’s producers acknowledged the significance of bringing the production to Broadway while announcing the closure.

“Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is an incredibly special, original piece of storytelling, and an unabashed love letter to New York City,” the producers said in a statement. They described bringing the show to Broadway as “a leap of faith” and expressed gratitude to audiences for embracing the production. The producers also praised the show’s creative team, cast and crew, specifically highlighting Tutty and Pitts for leading the Broadway production throughout its run.

“Bringing this show to Broadway was a leap of faith, and audiences met us with open arms,” the producers said. “We’re forever grateful to Tim, Kit, Jim, and the entire creative team for their beautiful work, and to the extraordinary cast led by Christiani & Sam and crew, for carrying the cake every night at the Longacre.”

Although the Broadway production is coming to an end, the musical’s journey in the United States will continue. The first national tour of Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is scheduled to launch in Providence, Rhode Island, in fall 2027, giving the production an opportunity to reach audiences outside New York. The producers said they were looking forward to taking the production across the country, describing the national tour as the next chapter for the musical.

“We cannot wait to tour this spectacular production across the country next year on its first national tour,” they said.

The Broadway production is produced by Kevin McCollum, known for producing shows including Six and Oh, Mary!, along with Tim Johanson, Glass Half Full Productions and Jamie Wilson Productions. For Tutty and Pitts, the Nov. 29 performance will mark the conclusion of their year-long Broadway engagement with the musical. Their performances have remained at the center of the production, which is designed around the evolving relationship between its two protagonists.

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) will continue performances at the Longacre Theatre through Nov. 29 before officially closing on Broadway. The scheduled 2027 national tour will then take the musical beyond New York as it begins its next stage of its run.
