Javier Bardem To Star In HBO Miami Finance Drama ‘The Spread’

Date:

HBO is expanding its slate of high-stakes dramas with The Spread, a new series set in the glamorous and competitive world of Miami’s wealthy elite. The network has given the drama a straight-to-series order, with Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem attached to star.

Created by Bill Dubuque, known for Ozark, and Sean Sansiveri, The Spread will explore power, wealth and ambition against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Miami. The series is being produced with Fifth Season TV Studio, with Bardem taking on the central role of a billionaire determined to reshape the city’s economic landscape.

According to the series logline, Bardem’s character is pursuing “the power to shift the center of economic gravity to Miami and decide how long the party lasts.” The premise positions the series around the influence of extreme wealth and the ambitions of the people seeking to control one of the world’s increasingly prominent financial and cultural centers.

The announcement comes as HBO’s existing finance drama Industry prepares to enter its final season. While Industry has focused on the intense professional and personal lives of young finance professionals, The Spread will approach the world of money and influence from the perspective of an established billionaire operating at the highest levels of power.

For HBO, the new series also marks an opportunity to explore Miami as the setting for a major scripted drama. The city’s luxury lifestyle, international business community and evolving economic identity will provide the backdrop for the story.

“Having long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida, HBO couldn’t be more excited to explore the gilded chaos of Miami and bring it to life with this kaleidoscope of extraordinary, visionary talent who is as fearless as the story itself,” Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of drama series and films, said in a statement.

Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker behind the Kingsman franchise and X-Men: First Class, is also joining the project. Vaughn is set to direct the series and will serve as an executive producer. His involvement adds a filmmaker with extensive experience in large-scale, visually distinctive productions to the HBO drama.

Dubuque and Sansiveri will executive produce alongside Bardem, Brad Weston of Makeready, and Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom of Topic Studios.

Fifth Season is also involved in the project, with Noah Greenshner, executive vice president and head of TV creative at the company, highlighting the series’ focus on both its central themes and its Miami setting.

“The Spread is a gripping story of power and ambition, set against the vivid, glamorous backdrop of Miami,” Greenshner said. “We’ve brought together an exceptional creative team to capture the energy of this world and city, and we’re thrilled to be working alongside them and our partners at HBO, Makeready, and Topic to bring it to life.”

The series gives Bardem another major television role following his recent work in Apple TV’s Cape Fear. The actor has increasingly expanded his television credits alongside his acclaimed film career. In 2025, he received an Emmy nomination for his performance in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Bardem remains one of the most prominent Spanish actors working internationally and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2007 film No Country for Old Men. His film credits also include Skyfall, Biutiful, Being the Ricardos and Dune.

The actor is set to return to the Dune franchise in Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for release in December. He will also appear in the upcoming feature Bunker, also due in December.

For The Spread, Bardem will be at the center of a story built around immense wealth, influence and the battle to shape Miami’s future. With Dubuque leading the writing team, Vaughn directing and Bardem starring, the series brings together a high-profile creative team for HBO’s latest drama focused on the intersection of money and power.

HBO has not yet announced a premiere date, episode count or additional cast members for The Spread.
