American Idol is leaving Hollywood behind for its milestone 25th season, with the long-running singing competition set to relocate production from Los Angeles to the Atlanta, Georgia, area. The move marks a major change for a series that has been closely associated with Hollywood since it first premiered more than two decades ago.
The ABC singing competition is expected to film its upcoming season in the Atlanta area rather than Los Angeles as it prepares to return in 2027. The relocation comes after the show had already begun moving away from one of its most familiar traditions during its 24th season, when “Hollywood Week” was held in Nashville instead of Hollywood.
For American Idol, the move represents more than a change in filming location. Hollywood has long been part of the show’s identity and vocabulary, particularly through the famous phrase “You’re going to Hollywood!” Contestants who successfully advanced through the audition process traditionally received Golden Tickets sending them to Hollywood Week, making the city an integral part of the competition’s journey.
The decision to move production appears to be connected largely to the financial incentives available to television productions outside California. Georgia has developed into one of the major production centers in the United States, particularly in and around Atlanta, by offering tax incentives intended to attract film and television projects to the state.
According to reports, Georgia can provide qualifying television productions with incentives of up to 30 percent. Season 25 of American Idol reportedly did not qualify for California’s tax credit, making Georgia a potentially more financially attractive location for the production.
The relocation also reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry, as television and film productions increasingly consider locations outside Los Angeles because of production costs and state incentive programs. Georgia, in particular, has established itself as a major destination for productions, with Atlanta serving as a base for numerous television and film projects.
The upcoming season will therefore give American Idol a noticeably different production environment. While the show’s format, judges and contestants remain central to its identity, moving production away from Los Angeles changes one of the most recognizable elements surrounding the competition.
The transition had already begun during Season 24. Rather than holding Hollywood Week in Los Angeles as it had traditionally done, the show took the stage of that portion of the competition to Nashville. That decision indicated that the program was becoming more flexible about the locations associated with its various stages.
Season 25 now takes that change considerably further by moving the production itself to the Atlanta region. The shift means that the phrase “Hollywood Week” carries a different significance for the series than it once did, particularly after the show began using other cities for stages of the competition.
Despite the relocation, the move does not mean that Hollywood is disappearing entirely from American Idol’s history or identity. The program’s association with the entertainment capital has been established over 20 years, from its early Fox seasons through its later revival on a news channel. Its Golden Ticket tradition and the famous Hollywood phrase remain closely connected with the show’s legacy.
The Atlanta move is also expected to generate discussion among longtime viewers who associate American Idol with Los Angeles. The change comes as the series reaches its 25th season, giving the milestone season an additional distinction beyond its anniversary.
For now, Season 25 is expected to continue the competition’s established search for new singers while operating from a new production base. Further details about the season, including its full filming schedule and other production changes, are expected to emerge as the 2027 return approaches.
With American Idol preparing to begin its next chapter in Georgia, one of television’s most familiar journeys is entering a new era — one that will take its contestants toward the next stage of the competition without making Los Angeles the center of production.
