Magenta Edge Films has acquired Good Sport, the second feature film from writer and director Andrew Jack Zuckerman, for a limited theatrical release beginning Sept. 20. The specialty distribution label, which operates under Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studios, will bring the independent film to audiences in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles before its digital release on Oct. 13.
Zuckerman co-wrote Good Sport with Dillon Orth. The film features an ensemble cast led by Sam Landman, Mike O’Gorman, Sari Lennick, Virginia Newcomb, Elizabeth Guest, Michelle Hutchison, Darius Jones and Esera Tuaolo. The independent comedy-drama centers on Pat, a father who finds himself dealing with several personal setbacks while being forced to take responsibility for his 12-year-old son’s basketball team.
According to the film’s synopsis, Pat is having an exceptionally difficult day. His ex-wife is preparing to remarry, he is dealing with a hangover and he must coach his son’s basketball team despite already struggling with his own feelings of failure. As the game unfolds, Pat has to contend with demanding and overprotective parents, an unpredictable opposing coach and the pressures of being a father. The experience ultimately pushes him to reconsider what is truly important in his life.
Good Sport has already made its way through the independent film festival circuit. The movie had its world premiere at Cinequest before screening at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and the 2025 Dances With Films Festival. Its reception at Dances With Films helped draw attention to the project, with the film ultimately receiving the festival’s narrative feature audience award.
Magenta Edge Films acquired the movie after its screening at Dances With Films. The acquisition follows the launch of Magenta Edge in early 2026, when Yari introduced the specialty division as an offshoot focused on acquiring and releasing independent films across theatrical and ancillary platforms. The label is intended to support filmmaker-driven projects and bring independent productions to wider audiences.
“Seeing how strongly the audience responded to the film, which went on to win the festival’s narrative feature audience award, made it even more special,” Bill Vergos, head of digital film distribution at Magenta Light Studios and Magenta Edge Films, said in a statement. “Good Sport is exactly the kind of inventive, filmmaker-driven independent film we created Magenta Edge to champion, and I’m thrilled to be working with Andrew and his team to bring it to audiences.”
The film was produced by Zuckerman, Orth, John Cronin, Sari Lennick and Suresh Cedrick Pereira, with Colby Leopard serving as associate producer. David Walton, Steven Clark, Michael McHugh, Doug Lennick, Arlene Goodman Alm, Jay Goldberger, Jim Moscowitz, Elias Savada and Landman are credited as executive producers.
The distribution agreement was negotiated by Vergos and C.J. Vranca on behalf of Magenta Edge Films. Alan Green of One Two Three Media represented the filmmakers in the deal. One Two Three Media will also oversee international sales for the film.
With its limited theatrical run starting Sept. 20 in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, Good Sport will receive its first dedicated theatrical release through Magenta Edge Films before expanding to digital platforms on Oct. 13. The acquisition marks another step for the newly established specialty label as it builds a slate centered on independent, filmmaker-driven cinema.
