Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made box office history, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at the North American box office. The Sony Pictures superhero blockbuster has earned $936.773 million domestically, narrowly surpassing the previous record held by 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which finished its domestic run with approximately $936.6 million.
The record comes after 47 days in theaters, marking another major milestone in an extraordinary theatrical run for the latest Spider-Man installment. The film has consistently broken domestic box office records since its July 31 release and became the fastest movie to reach a series of major revenue milestones, moving from $400 million to $900 million faster than any previous film.
The movie’s official Instagram account celebrated the achievement with a message thanking audiences for helping the film make cinematic history. The post highlighted the movie’s new position at the top of the all-time North American box office chart and encouraged fans to continue seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day exclusively in theaters.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and follows the superhero through a more isolated period of his life before an unknown enemy begins tracking him down. Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal also appear in the film. Produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, the movie is approaching its eighth weekend in theaters after dominating the domestic box office during each of its first six weekends.
The film’s record-breaking performance has extended well beyond its latest achievement. Earlier in its run, Brand New Day overtook Avengers: Endgame to claim the No. 2 position on the all-time domestic box office chart before eventually moving past The Force Awakens for the top spot. It also surpassed Endgame to establish the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, collecting $360 million in its first three days.
Following its record opening, the film continued to demonstrate exceptional staying power. It recorded the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history and became the second-fastest movie to reach $1 billion worldwide, behind Avengers: Endgame. On the current all-time global chart, Brand New Day sits at No. 3, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also contributed significantly to the overall performance of the summer movie season. The global box office for the summer reached approximately $4.765 billion, making it the highest-grossing summer on record and surpassing the previous benchmark established in 2013. Other major releases contributing to the total included Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The latest Spider-Man film also faced the considerable challenge of following Spider-Man: No Way Home, the 2021 installment that became one of the franchise’s biggest theatrical events. That film currently ranks fourth on the all-time domestic chart and drew enormous attention by bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as previous versions of Peter Parker.
Sony Pictures film chief Tom Rothman previously discussed the challenge of following No Way Home and explained that the studio deliberately avoided simply trying to make the next movie bigger in scale. Instead, the creative strategy focused on going deeper into the character and creating a stronger emotional connection with audiences.
That approach has now produced one of the most commercially successful superhero films in domestic box office history. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day still in theaters and approaching its eighth weekend, its record-breaking theatrical run continues to add another chapter to the long-running success of the Spider-Man franchise.
